IHI Partners Retreat - September 28/29, 2010
Dena van den Bergh, Gary Kantor, Brian Ruff, Kedar Mate and Michele Youngleson were among those who attended the Institute of Healthcare Improvement partner's retreat, held in the Magaliesberg. Great discussion around the formation of a "quality movement" in South Africa, spanning all sectors of the health system.
BCA in the Western Cape
A successful meeting was held on September 28 between BCA (Dena van den Bergh, Yolanda Walsh) and the Director-General of the W Cape Dept of Health, Dr Craig Househam and his staff.
Gauteng Public Sector CEO Workshop, August 13 2010
Over 30 representatives of 13 public hospitals in Gauteng attended this meeting held in Johannesburg, including several CEOs.
Officials from the national Department of Health and Gauteng province also participated.
The workshop was lead by Brandon Bennett, a senior trainer from the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, Dr Dena Van den Bergh, and Dr Michele Youngleson.

Gauteng Province Workshop 30 March 2010
The Best Care Always! Gauteng Province workshop held on the 30 March 2010 was attended by over 85 enthusiatic delegates (pictured below) representing 15 Gauteng provincial hospitals. Hospital teams were equipped with information and tools to aid them in formulating a plan for implementing the Infection Prevention Bundles relevant to their hospitals and measure their improvement. A Gauteng Province BCA learning collaborative for the campaign has been established and will meet monthly. We look forward to hearing more about their journey and supporting their process.

BCA was officially launched at the combined congress of FIDSSA and CCSA in Sun City, August 2009. Supported by Dr Adrian Brink, President of FDISSA, two presentations were given to introduce the campaign. In the exhibition hall there was evidence of much interest in the issues we have chosen to address; 94 delegates completed a
about the campaign’s interventions. Among this group there is a high level of agreement (76-98%) (

) that hospital-acquired infections, as well as the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, are serious problems in South African hospitals. A similar proportion of the delegates support the implementation of infection control bundles (82%) and of antibiotic prescribing guidelines (98%).
