Central Line Associated Bloodstream Infection


Mortality from central line-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) is approximately 20%. Mortality and morbidity can be significantly reduced by implementing a set of interdependent, scientifically grounded steps in all patients requiring a central line.

The main CLABSI intervention measure is the central line-associated blood stream infection rate per 1000 central line days.

The “Getting Started” change packages were based on the state of knowledge at the time of publication. Since their introduction, new evidence has emerged which should be reviewed and incorporated by hospitals and clinical teams. Bundles and change packages compiled in other countries may need adaptation to the South African setting.
